The National Horseracing Museum 99 High Street, Newmarket, Suffolk, CB8 8JH t 01638 667333
The National Horseracing Museum is a charity which relies for its income on donations, admissions and its cafe and shop.
We are therefore very grateful to the Friends of the Museum, who raise funds for new acquisitions such as the horse simulator, and to the many individuals and companies who have supported us either by providing items for the collection and the Practical Gallery, or by helping us with services or cash donations.
We should particularly like to thank The Friends of the Museum, SAAB, The Racing Post, Barclays Bank, Ladbrokes, The Jockey Club and Homebase. A full list of sponsors is shown in the Museum.
One highlight of the galleries is the Triple Crown display, which includes an oil of Gainsborough painted by James Lynwood-Palmer (see above). This has been acquired through a generous donation from The Friends of the National Horseracing Museum, matched by a grant from the Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund. Gainsborough was foaled in 1915, and by winning the Triple Crown of 1918 made his owner the first woman to win the Derby or indeed any Classic race in her own colours. Since then, Sun Chariot (Fillies version in 1942), Bahram (in 1935), Meld (Fillies version in 1955), Nijinsky (in 1970), and Oh So Sharp (Fillies version in 1985) have been Triple Crown winners. Naturally, they are also featured.
Membership of the Friends of the Museum entitles you to free admission to the Museum, a reduction in the cafe, invitations to Private Views and the chance to take part in a variety of Special Events during the year. Please contact the Secretary of the Friends c/o The Museum for further details.
