Annual Farrier Competition

This event has closed.

Come and support the competitors as their shoemaking skills are put to the test in the 2022 annual Farrier Competition. It’s always a fun and interesting day as we watch the sparks fly!

Did you know that it takes over 4 years to qualify to become a farrier?

The Competition:

The competition is organised by Gavin Moody and judged by renowned farrier William O’Shaughnessy A.W.C.F., a long-time member of the Irish International Shoemaking team.

The competition is split into heats between 1st and 2nd years, and 3rd and 4th years, with an open competition finishing off the day. You’ll also get the opportunity to watch the farriers and apprentices honing their skills as they attempt to make horseshoes in just 10 minutes in the forge!

We’re grateful to Stromsholm who are kindly providing all the steel on the day, and to Atlantic Equine for all their support.

If you’d like to take part in the competition, please contact Gavin on for more information and entrance fees.
