Newmarket Chess Sculpture Trail Launch

In support of the Museum’s current HORSEPLAY Exhibition, a new Public Art Trail designed by Neith Art & Sculpture has been commissioned. The eight striking, hand-carved chess pieces will be unveiled prior to them being located in the town centre for the summer.

As part of the event, two horse-head sculptures will be carved live using chainsaws, giving visitors a rare glimpse into the creative process. These three pieces will then be auctioned off at the end of the launch!

Timetable of the day:

10am – View the carved chess themed pieces, unveiled for the first time

10.15am & 11.15am – Live carving chainsaw demonstration

12.30pm – Auction of three carved horse heads

Throughout the morning, you’ll have the chance to learn all about how to play chess, with sessions provided by Newmarket Chess Club. Plus, be sure to empty your cupboards and bring along any old games, toys, dolls and chess sets, with valuations taking place by Reeman Dansie Auctioneers & Valuers.

This event is in partnership with Discover Newmarket, Newmarket Town Council, Love Newmarket and the National Horseracing Museum.
