The Newmarket and District Branch RBL will be placing a Poppy horse blanket on the Statue of Frankel, at the National Horse Racing Museum. Members will also be setting up the Garden of Remembrance around the statue in the Courtyard.
Crosses will be placed in Remembrance of all those from Newmarket, who died as a result of World War 1, World War 2 and includes civilians killed by enemy action.
Remembrance honours the sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms, particularly members of the armed forces and those who have died in conflicts and acts of terrorism, not just during the World Wars but those who have served and sacrificed, in other and ongoing conflicts since.
Branch Chairman, Paul Greenwood said, “We are extremely grateful for the generosity of Karl Butcher from Gibson Saddlers Ltd, who donated the blankets for two locations and for our volunteers who knitted and stitched the poppies onto the blankets. The branch set up a blanket on the statue of Hyperion at The Jockey Club last year and expanded this initiative this year with the statue of Frankel at the NHRM.”
Karl provided blankets for both locations.
The Branch received coverage of this project at The Jockey Club last year on a local, county and national basis and it is important that we continued with this project, to develop our support and involvement, with partnership working with the NHRM.
The Branch has sponsored the wooden crosses for the Garden of Remembrance, through a donation to the Newmarket Poppy Appeal. The Garden was previously set up near Birdcage Walk but it was decided to bring it closer into the Town Centre.
