Join our free after-school STEM club – The Bill Tutte Club!
After a break following the covid pandemic, the Bill Tutte Club is back!
Coordinated by Dr Rachel Wood of the Bill Tutte Memorial Fund with support from Christine Shand from Newmarket Academy and our Creative Programme Manager, Sarah Coleman with a jam-packed timetable of sessions, from Robotics with BT, visits to NHRM, Zoology Museum and Astra Zeneca and even Christmas Maths!
Dr Rachel Wood, one of the trustees of the Bill Tutte Memorial Fund said: “If you love Maths and Science, are in Years 5 to 9, and can get to our sessions, then the Bill Tutte Club is for you! Our Club is named after Bill Tutte, the famous WWII codebreaker who was born in Newmarket in 1917. The Bill Tutte Memorial Fund wants you to have the chance to be just as inspired by Maths and Science as Bill himself was, and we are very grateful to Newmarket Academy and the NHRM for making this possible.”
The Club was founded in 2013 as an initiative of the Bill Tutte Memorial Fund, Newmarket Academy and Newmarket Town Council and the National Horseracing Museum. The Club is a living legacy for Newmarket that allows local young people to explore Maths and Science in a friendly, informal environment.
Its aims are to:
- inspire young people with the Bill Tutte story, and show how exciting Maths and Science can be!
- create a community of young people with similar academic interests, encouraging collaboration and innovation.
- promote high achievement at Newmarket Academy, and make this visible to the wider community.
- strengthen links between Newmarket schools and local businesses.
- encourage a sense of community pride among the residents of Bill Tutte’s home town.
It is open to all young people with an interest in STEM from Years 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 in the Newmarket area, including surrounding villages. We meet once a month at Newmarket Academy, from 4pm to 6pm and we have planned a varied programme including some exciting visits.

Christine Shand, Newmarket Academy, said: ‘It’s just so great to bring the Bill Tutte Club back and for the legacy of Bill Tutte to continue to inspire and have a positive impact on local children and students from Newmarket Academy. We know that past Bill Tutte club members have gone on to university with support from the Bill Tutte Memorial Fund and have amazing careers in STEM related industries.’
Sarah Coleman, Creative Programme Manager, NHRM said: ‘We really can’t wait to meet all the Bill Tutte Club members, we’ve put together a really exciting programme of activity exploring a wide range of STEM subjects and careers, including equine science, and we are looking forward to the upcoming sessions.’
