Join 260 local schoolchildren and make your own Carbon Pledge…

Over the summer term we welcomed over 260 children from six local primary schools as part of our Racing into the Future – Going Green! learning programme exploring climate change and carbon reduction.

This fully funded STEAM curricula linked programme followed on from 2023’s popular fully funded Wild Escape learning programme, Racing Wild: Inspiring a Generation! which engaged over 200 children from Houldsworth Valley, All Saints, Ditton Lodge and Fairstead House primary schools in Newmarket.

This year, our focus was on carbon reduction and children found out about our green building, rainwater harvesting system and considered the muck heap’s role in growing vegetables locally . They gathered essential information about the biodiversity of our site through a bioblitz so we can begin to build a picture of change over the years and planted seeds to cerate a wildflower meadow walk in our Paddocks.

The children made their own Carbon and Climate Pledges and decided on a pledge for their school which can be seen on mural boards created with children’s artwork from the sessions with environmental artist, Hilary Cox Condron.

Sarah Coleman, Creative Programme Manager at NHRM said: “We want the whole community to think about the small changes they can make to reduce carbon every day and to be inspired to make a carbon pledge with us. From recycling more, to growing your own veg, composting and switching off lights – there’s something we can all do that together will make a huge difference and you can add your pledge online here [ https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/5KK78N/  ]

“We are hugely grateful to our funders, without whom this project would not have happened: Museum Development South East, SHARE Environmentally Responsible Museums programme and thank you to British Horseracing for supporting.

Finally, thanks to our amazing inspiring young people who participated.”

Participating schools were Laureate, All Saints, Exning, Houldsworth Valley, Paddocks and St Louis Primary Schools.

Murals will be installed in the Guineas Centre, the market place car park and the museum.
