Families can now enjoy a Jockey’s Journey – a brand-new interactive trail, included with general museum admission.
Your adventure begins in the main Museum galleries, where you’ll take on a series of fun challenges designed to test the skills every jockey needs to earn their licence.
First, step onto the scales and check out your racing weight. Then discover the colourful world of jockey silks and design your own set of racing colours.
Watch a short film explaining the difference between flat racing and jump racing, and decide which type of jockey you would like to be.
Next, head to the Rothschild Yard and visit the Pre-Parade Room to prepare for your first race. Can your horse win the title of “best turned out”? Then make your way to the Saddle Room to practise saddling up “Woodie”, our incredibly patient static horse.
Put your balance and core strength to the test by seeing how long you can hold a squat on the balance boards — who will come out on top in your family?
Grab a hobby horse and enter the Parade Ring to soak up the atmosphere and see who looks most ready for race day.
Finally, take on the ultimate jockey challenge in King’s Yard with a ride on the horse simulator and see if you can guide your horse to victory.
Once you’ve completed the trail, you’ll receive your official Jockey for a Day licence before stepping onto the winners’ podium for a celebratory selfie. Don’t forget to share your photos using #nhrmjockeysjourney
The trail can be completed in any order, allowing families to explore the activities at their own pace, with the horse simulator reserved as the final challenge. You are free to stop and start throughout your visit, making it easy to fit the experience around the rest of your day at the Museum.
Better still, all admission tickets are automatically upgraded to an annual pass, meaning you can return again and again to perfect your jockey skills.
And if Jockey’s Journey inspires a future career in horseracing, then when you are ready, why not take the next step and enrol on a course at the British Racing School?
