#WeAreNewmarket

We are very excited to launch a new community art project. This month we welcome local artists Keith Hopewell and Nikki Goldup to the museum. During the next three months they will be working with local groups to produce a huge new artwork that will be displayed in the Atrium. Alongside this project look out for some very special public art coming to Newmarket and a whole host of drop-in workshops and open studio days. Follow us on social media to keep up with the latest news.

The new project is called #WeAreNewmarket and it’s all about YOU!

Are you a Newmarket resident? What people, places, buildings, plants, homes, history or feelings represent Newmarket to you? It could be the clock tower, a building you see every day on the way to work or school, the horses crossing over to the gallops, the street sign at the top of your road… an object that represents your job… maybe a person, someone who you feel represents your view of Newmarket or perhaps a photo of your home or the diversity of all the people who live in the town.

We want to illustrate everyone’s ideas, so during the project we will be collecting images produced in community-based workshops and museum drop-in sessions. These could take the form of photos, collages, drawings or even writing. We are open to all ideas as this is the Town’s artwork and a snapshot of life in Newmarket in 2021.

So, what’s next?

You can visit Nikki & Keith in their studio in Kings Yard at the museum on 15 or 22 October from 11am – 4pm. You can also drop-in to a workshop session on 27 October 10am –1pm, 29 October 1pm – 4pm or 20 November 10am –1pm. All ages are welcome, and you don’t need to be a confident artist to take part! Check our Events page for more details.

We will be welcoming artworks made in our workshops or made at home and delivered to the museum… but they need to fit into a square or rectangular format, maximum dimensions 21cm by 15cm (A5) size and have your name and contact e-mail on the back (or those of an adult if you’re under 18).

We will also be using social media to share your images, so if you are a keen photographer, or have an image of your work use the hashtag #WeAreNewmarket so we can share your ideas and thoughts.

Do keep a look out for some exciting new art hitting the high street soon… something very different for Newmarket in 2021 and all part of this exciting project.
